— Our Research Programmes

From raw materials to a sustainable and functional landscape

Programme: Strategy for Raw Materials Security

Ensuring the long-term availability of strategic and critical raw materials is essential for economic stability, the energy transition, and technological competitiveness. iSET develops analytical and predictive tools that combine geological data, material flows, technological trends, and geopolitical risks.

The programme focuses on technologies that enable efficient and environmentally responsible resource extraction. Key areas include low-emission mining, the use of secondary resources, and especially the recycling of CRMs from batteries and accumulators, in full compliance with European legislative frameworks.

Programme: Mitigation of Post-Mining Legacy Issues

Mining leaves lasting environmental and health impacts on both the landscape and society. iSET specializes in the systematic identification and mitigation of these legacies—ranging from surface and groundwater quality to mine methane emissions, thermal activity in coal heaps, and soil degradation.

Based on our research, we design both technical and nature-based solutions. Our goal is to stabilize affected areas, minimize risks, and restore the landscape for safe, meaningful, and sustainable future use.

Programme: Just Transition: A Path to Landscape Resilience

We support the transformation of post-mining regions into long-term functional and resilient territories. Working alongside regional authorities, municipalities, and state administration, we design transformation strategies and adaptation plans built to withstand climate change, demographic shifts, and economic transition. Our goal is to develop solutions that transcend short-term subsidy cycles, delivering lasting benefits for the landscape, regional economies, and local communities.

Programme: Mining Landscape Restoration and Development

Through "soft" transformation tools—including education, public participation, local capacity building, and administrative support—we generate the knowledge base for informed decision-making. Our mission is to facilitate a transition that is tailored to the specific needs of each region, fully aligned with both national and European strategic frameworks.
