“We didn't start in a boardroom, we started as a response to a crisis. When the rapid decline of mining and heavy industry hit our region, it wasn't just the production that stopped. It was the research, the innovation, and the momentum. We saw decades of specialized know-how on the brink of vanishing, and with it, the risk of our most motivated people—our scientists and local patriots—leaving for good.
We refused to let that happen.
Our philosophy was simple: the people who understand the history of this land must be the ones to drive its future. We built iSET to anchor that expertise here. We created it to ensure that the engine of regional change is powered by those who actually care about its outcome.

Post-Mining Information Model and Digital Twin
Project addresses the urgent need for a harmonized digital framework to support the sustainable transition of European post-mining regions. These areas face complex environmental, geotechnical, and socio-economic challenges, lacking interoperable tools for risk management, land-use planning, and stakeholder coordination. The project will deliver the first universal Postmining Information Modelling Standard (PIMS), leveraging BIM principles to create structured, semantically rich digital representations of post-mining landscapes - validated across Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, and Spain.

SMART METHANE
The project is a direct response to the EU's legislative mandates for reducing methane emissions, in strict accordance with EU Regulation 2024/1787. Our core objective is the development of an autonomous IoT system capable of precise measurement and effective management of methane emissions within both active and post-mining areas. By bridging the research with the expertise of industrial partners, the project aims to deliver substantial environmental benefits while prioritizing the commercialization of this scalable solution. From Coal to Farm
The project aims to develop an innovative framework for post-mining land reclamation, merging environmental restoration with sustainable agricultural practices. Project focuses on converting degraded land into productive agricultural spaces, promoting both ecological and socio-economic growth. Central to this effort is the Agricultural Toolkit, a comprehensive online resource offering tools such as a geospatial database, carbon farming and energy crop calculators, and practical guides for land reclamation. The toolkit will assist stakeholders in making informed decisions on transforming post-mining areas into carbon-sequestering agricultural lands. The project focuses on three key regions: Most Basin (Czech Republic), Western Macedonia (Greece), and Sieniawa (Poland), developing tailored reclamation scenarios for each. Led by a multidisciplinary consortium of six partners from three European countries, COFA will support coal-transitioning regions by fostering sustainable land use, engaging stakeholders through workshops, and contributing to climate change mitigation efforts.

Fire Risk Assessment and Management of European Coal Heaps
Project Fire Risk Assessment and Management of European Coal Heaps addresses one of Europe's most urgent post-mining environmental challenges – the spontaneous combustion of coal spoil heaps. These sites release toxic gases, greenhouse emissions, threatening both ecosystems and local communities. Project introduces a pioneering solution by combining thermal imaging, real-time gas sensors, and predictive models with renewable-energy-powered monitoring stations. A key project outcome is a European-wide inventory of coal spoil heaps, identifying high-risk sites and providing crucial tools for reclamation strategies and policy development.

Research and Development of Purification and Recycling of Used Cooking Oils
The main objective of the project was to develop and pilot test a technology for purification and recycling of used cooking oils (UCO) into products suitable for further processing by refining processes and to prepare documentation for demonstration or operational implementation of the technology. One of the essential parts of the project was the pilot collection of used cooking oils from households at selected ORLEN service stations. An extensive database of household UCO samples has been compiled. Total of close to 7,000 analytical methods have been performed to assess more than 13,000 individual quality parameters. The output of the project was an industrial design, utility model, a functional sample, a validated technology and a prototype.

Advanced Biofuels and Renewable Fuels from Sustainable Value Chain
Project establishes sustainable, complete value chains for advanced biofuels and Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) to provide Europe with a secure, competitive, and sustainable energy supply. Operating across four demonstration sites in Belgium, Spain, and Greece, FUELPHORIA targets transport (aviation, maritime, road) and power production sectors, while exploring European export potential through collaboration with Africa. It integrates Life Cycle Assessment with logistics management to optimize feedstock supply and fuel delivery, while defining business models, market entry strategies, and policy recommendations for the energy transition..

Availability of UCO Waste for its Processimg into the Energy Source
The aim of the project was to characterize the sources of used cooking oils (UCO), methods of disposal and pretreatment of UCO for processing into substances suitable for energy use, including the identification of their properties. An extensive study of UCO sources was undertaken, and samples of various UCOs were secured and analyzed. Particular attention was paid to the solid deposits of raw UCO and to the issue of the oil-contaminated aqueous phase. The output of the project was four functional samples, a comprehensive research report and a mapping of the resource distribution and associated logistics costs.

Sustainable Resource Management and Energy Transition
This initiative built on extensive experience gained through the development and management of European research and innovation projects in renewable energy, energy storage, sustainable materials, water treatment and circular economy. The work connected industrial companies, research organisations and public stakeholders to accelerate the deployment of resource-efficient technologies and low-carbon solutions. Particular attention was given to sustainable use of materials, renewable energy systems and innovation pathways supporting regional transformation. The accumulated know-how provides a strong basis for addressing current challenges related to energy transition, environmental sustainability and circular resource management in former industrial and mining regions.

Sustainable Use of Mining Waste Dumps
The aim of the project was to determine ways to optimise the use and long-term management of mining spoil dumps. Spoil dumps are the massive heaps of overburden materials that are excavated during the coal extraction process. The spoils can contain a wide range of rock fragments and fines. Randomness in the dumping process, various methods for the excavation and transportation and local site effects can influence the spoil behaviour in a dump site. Hence, the dump spoil materials are usually considered as heterogeneous and exhibit a time-dependent mechanical behaviour. This project united European experts to investigate the future use of made-ground consisting of coal-mining spoil with a focused on geotechnical, sustainability, environmental and socio-economic challenges.

Risk Assessment of Final Pits During Flooding
Research issues related to pit lakes, which is one of the most common uses of post exploitation voids. The main achievements in the projectare were connected with the creation of comprehensive models that can be used for risk assessment purposes. Innovative outcomes of the project contributed to methodologies and guidelines to improve the safety, security, and environment aspects of flooded open pit mines. The project was based on in-situ investigation, laboratory tests, and numerical and physical modelling to achieve the objectives.

Compact Gasification ans Synthesis Process for Transoort Fuels
Project developed an energy-efficient, small-to-medium-scale process to produce advanced drop-in biofuels from diverse biomass residues like wood waste, agricultural debris, and municipal solid waste. Led by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the project integrated flexible gasification with compact Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to create liquid fuel intermediates, which were then upgraded into transport fuels within existing oil refineries. By combining modular decentralized processing with established centralized refinery infrastructure, COMSYN aimed to reduce biofuel production costs by up to 35% and cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil fuels.

Smarter Lignite Open Pit Engineering Solutions
The project bringed together experts from across Europe to advance the current technology and methodologies applied to monitoring and risk analysis of slopes within open pit lignite mines. Modern techniques which aim to overcome the challenges of monitoring within open pit mines were deployed and tested within real mines and results were compared against physical model tests as well as rigorous numerical modelling. A reliability-based method for the evaluation of risks was developed based on monitoring and modelling results which provided significant benefits to design optimisation and decision support within real open-pit lignite mines.

Twin Laser Scanning for Landscape and Infrastructure Monitoring
The project focused on the application of advanced terrestrial laser scanning and geospatial technologies for the creation of high-precision 3D models of buildings, infrastructure and land surfaces. The work supported the monitoring of structural deformations, terrain changes and complex engineering structures through detailed spatial data analysis. The developed expertise enables efficient digital documentation of large-scale environments and provides valuable tools for landscape management, brownfield regeneration and post-mining land monitoring. The project contributed to the adoption of digital approaches for spatial planning and environmental decision-making.
